The Rajputana Experience tour offers a unique experience
of travel to Mehrangarh Fort, one of the largest forts
in India.
During travel to Jodhpur, you will be spellbound by
the grandeur of this tourist attraction of Jodhpur.
Situated on a 400-feet high hillock, the Mehrangarh
Fort is guarded by huge and thick walls. It is indeed
the most imposing structure you will get to see during
travel to Mehrangarh Fort.
The construction of the Fort of Mehrangarh has a very
interesting history associated with it. Mandore in Rajasthan
was always known to be the capital of the Rathore rulers.
When Rao Jodha decided to build a safer fort as the
Mandore Fort was no longer strong to defend the royals,
he started the construction of the Mehrangarh Fort in
1459.
Built on a hill known as the Bhaurcheeria, or the bird
mountain, the construction of the Mehrangarh Fort led
to the evacuation of the 'lord of birds' Cheeria Nathji,
who resided in that hill. To save himself from the curse
of the 'lord', Rao Jodha built quite a few temples inside
the fort's premises. In fact, the king even buried a
man alive to relieve the site of all bad omens.
The Chamunda Mataji Temple is housed in the Mehrangarh
Fort. In the year 1460, the idol of goddess Chamunda
was installed in the fort. During Dussehra, the city
of Jodhpur comes alive as people throng the Mehrangarh
Fort in huge numbers to pay a visit to this temple.
The Mehrangarh Fort has many galleries that have enviable
collections of armory, palanquins, paintings, turbans,
musical instruments and treasures.
The fort also houses four luxurious and elegant palaces
- Moti Mahal, Sheesh Mahal, Phool Mahal and Takhat Vilas.
