The Chittorgarh Fort crowns the peak of a 180-meter
high sandstone hillock in Chittor, Rajasthan, India.
The term Chittorgarh was an adaptation of the name Chitrangad
Maurya, a Sisodia king. The fort was referred to as
Madhyamika in the olden days.
The Chittorgarh fort was an important seat of political
power in between the eighth and sixteenth centuries.
The Chittorgarh Fort was dominated by Gehlot rulers
for a while but for most part of the history the fort
was dominated by the Sisodia kings.
There are seven magnificent and imposing gateways or
pols that lead to the main fort premises. The steep
trek up the sandstone hillock is in itself a splendid
and historic experience.
The palatial structures and towers within the Chittorgarh
Fort are definitely among the best illustrations of
Rajputana building styles though the main reason why
Chittorgarh Fort has gone down in the annals of history
is the fact that the fort suffered three massive sieges
from enemies superior in military might.
On all three occasions, the Rajput armies displayed
exemplary courage and fought to death but refused to
surrender. On all the three occasions the women of the
royal families committed mass suicide or 'johar'. This
tragic sacrifice was made as Rajput women have always
preferred death to dishonor.
The Rajputana Experience itinerary offers you ample
opportunity to feel the very soul of the brave who lived
