On the second day of The Rajputana Experience tour,
you will undertake a special journey to tourist attractions
of Old Delhi. There are quite a few citadels and other
structures worth a visit on travel to Delhi.
Old Delhi, earlier known as Shahjahanabad, was the
capital of Mughal ruler Shah Jahan and is a must-visit
during sightseeing in Delhi. The gates in Old Delhi,
namely Kashmiri Gate, Ajmeri Gate, Delhi Gate and Turkman
Gate were the entrances into the city.
Some of the famous tourist attractions in Old Delhi
are:
Red Fort
Built by Shah Jahan, the Red Fort is situated on the
banks of River Yamuna. Exhibiting splendid Indo-Islamic
architecture, the fort is built in red sandstone and
hence called so. The light and sound show organized
here in the evenings is a major attraction of Old Delhi.
Jama Masjid
The largest mosque in India, the Jama Masjid was built
in 1650. Located just opposite the Red Fort, it is one
of the holiest pilgrimage sites for followers of Islam.
The mosque can accommodate 2000 worshippers at the time
of Namaz.
Chandni Chowk
The most popular market place and food hub of Old Delhi,
Chandni Chowk is more than 300 years old. Shah Jahan's
daughter Jahanara designed this marketplace. It has
endless wholesale and retail shops and is the best bet
for shopping in Delhi.
The Ghats
These are those places on the banks of Yamuna where
prominent Indian leaders were cremated. Raj Ghat, the
site where Mahatma Gandhi was cremated is one of the
most visited sites in Old Delhi. The other sites nearby
are Shanti Van. Shakti Sthal, Veer Bhumi and Vijay Ghat.
Other Old Delhi tourist attractions that deserve a
visit on The Rajputana Experience tour are Chawri Bazaar,
Old Fort, Gurudwara Sheesh Ganj, Sunahari Masjid and
hordes of other worship places.
