Taj Mahal was built by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan
(Khurram) in the memory of his beloved wife and queen
Mumtaz Mahal
Taj Mahal is a Mausoleum that houses the grave of
queen Mumtaz Mahal (Arjumand Banu Begum) at the lower
chamber. The grave of Shah Jahan was added to it after
his death.
This architectural wonder was constructed over a
period of twenty-two years, employing twenty thousand
workers.
Ustad 'Isa was the master architect associated with
this mega project. The Taj Mahal shows remarkable synthesis
of various architectural traditions, particularly Islamic,
Persian, Hindu and Mughal architecture.
This beautiful structure was completed in 1648 at
a staggering cost of 32 million Rupees.
The Taj Mahal has been constructed on a 313 square
feet marble platform, providing it a good skyline. The
beautiful double dome has a diameter of 60 feet and
a height of 80 feet.
Inlaid design of flowers and calligraphy, using precious
gems such as agate and jasper, has been used for decorating
the entire building.
