Agra acted as the Mughal capital for a long period
of time, due to its strategic location. During their
long stay Mughals had constructed several remarkable
royal structures, and one of these is the Agra Fort.
This magnificent structure is not only an architectural
masterpiece but at the same time a symbol of the political
supremacy achieved by the Mughals in India
Agra Fort was built by Akbar in Red Sandstone, later
on many of the structures inside the fort were added
by his successors like Jahangir and Shahjahan. Of the
nearly 500 Akbari buildings inside the Agra Fort, only
a few have survived
There are two main gates, the Delhi Gate and the
Amar Singh Gate, remarkable for their grand towers
The fort contains magnificent structures constructed
in red sandstone, many of which were converted into
marble structures during the reign of Jehangir and Shahjahan.
Jahangiri mahal, is one of the most noteworthy building
inside Agra Fort. It was a palace for women belonging
to the royal household. To the right of Jahangiri Mahal
is a simple palace of Akbar's favourite queen Jodha
Bai.
Khas Mahal, is famous for its three pavilions overlooking
the Yamuna. The central pavilion was used by the emperor
as a sleeping chamber
Diwani-i-Khas was the hall of private audience. It
was built by Shahjahan and was used to receive kings,
dignitaries and ambassadors.
Diwan-i-Am was the Hall of Public Audiences. It was
here that the emperor met officials and commoners and
listened to the petitioners.
Sheesh Mahal was used as the royal dressing room
The Sheesh Mahal is composed of two large halls of equal
size.
The Moti Masjid is a beautiful pearl mosque built
in white marble. It was constructed by Shahjahan.
